The situation for LGBTQ persons in the Republic of Georgia is, let’s say, growing increasingly hostile in many areas of the country. With fierce condemnation from the Georgian Orthodox church – tantamount to declaring them anti-Georgian – there is a type of propaganda war going on…which has led to some priests taking part in violence against those peaceably organizing for civil rights and the sadly familiar trope of equating LGBTQ with pedophilia.
I’ve included a message from Archbishop Songulashvili below. I’ve posted a link to the pdf on my site: http://mshvidoba.org/17.pdf
Please join our friends in the Georgian Baptist Church in this effort on Facebook and Twitter (and other avenues)!
This is to invite all our friends to join us in solidarity with the LGBT community in Georgia. This year the Government of Georgia is not giving any guarantee that they will not be attacked again on May 17th. This is why we are joining them up in expressing solidarity with them by taking pictures and posting on facebook.
Here is the Georgian Statement to print out before you take photo which you can find in the attachment. It says “May 17 is a Day Against Homophobia”. Do not forget to put the hashtag ( #17MayTbilisi2015 ) on the photo when you upload it on Facebook.
